Antisemitism

Statement on recent events in London by the Next Century Foundation

The recent terror attacks on the Jewish community in Britain are profoundly shocking and abhorent. That things should have come to this pass is deeply distrurbing. Antisemitism is a cancer that must be rooted out and cannot be tolerated in an inclusive and civilised society.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is built on the principle of respect for the other. Our laws foster respect for our minorities, all of our minorities. And the Jewish community is one we treasure as a vital element of what makes us British. We are a society with many cultures, cultures that respect one another. Those that attempt to undermine the unity and tolerance upon which our society is based are more than misguided. They are subversive in the most irresponsible way. There is not room for terrorism in Britian. There is not any room for Antisemitism in our tolerant society. Nor for that matter Islamophobia, nor any form of racism.

British society is built on the Judeo-Christian maxim echoed in Islam, the Golden Rule, “Do as you would be done by”. We care deeply about all strands of society in this United Kingdom. Recent events in North London break this rule in the most fundamental way. We are a tolerant and inclusive society and always shall be and we will not allow extremism to undermine our values. We are better than that.
