Ms. Eiman Hamza Baldo Head of NCF Sudan, presented an oral statement in the 59th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. This statement addresses the worsening human rights crisis in Sudan, recalling past UN Security Council actions following the Darfur conflict and highlighting new allegations of genocide and war crimes. It calls for urgent international measures to ensure accountability, protect civilians, and support Sudan’s unity.
The Statement:
Dear excellencies,
The ongoing conflict in Sudan has raised significant concerns regarding human rights violations and allegations of genocide. After the Darfur war in 2003, the UN Security Council passed numerous resolutions concerning the situation which addressed a range of issues, including the protection of civilians, the mandate of peacekeeping missions, and the referral of the situation to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
In particular, UNSC Resolution 1593 referred the situation in Darfur to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for investigation and prosecution of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
After the onset of the April war in April 2023, many atrocities were committed including breaches of humanitarian law, war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. The designation of genocide came from many sources, including the UN, the US government, and human rights organisations. There are repercussions for the designation of genocide in terms of accountability, justice and retribution to individuals and communities affected. Currently communities all over Sudan are subjected to extrajudicial killings on ethnic grounds during a total collapse of the state apparatus and justice systems.
In September 2024 the United Nations fact-finding mission accused both the SAF and the
RSF of complicity in war crimes.
We call for the extension of resolutions 1591 and 1593 to all of Sudan and for a launch of a protection of civilian mechanism by referring the issue to the UN General Assembly. We also call for an urgent resolution of the conflict preserving the unity of Sudan.
Thank you
