UNHRC53 Oral Statement: Transcript

Women and girls are half the population of the globe. But all too often their viewpoints, contribution, and ideas are disregarded. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan President of the Republic of Türkiye has fought gender equality clawed back women’s rights and repressed women’s rights organizations during his 20 years in office. He pulled his Nation out of the historic Istanbul Convention of the Council of Europe on domestic and gender-based violence prevention in 2021. Türkiye’s communication directorate claimed that a group of individuals are trying to normalize homosexuality and had hijacked the convention. “We Will Stop Femicide” was the cry used by the Turkish woman who took to the streets to express their outrage. Thorough investigation, appropriate sanction and training for police and court officials on gender equality and the prevention of violence would help. Turkish institutions could launch awareness-raising initiatives to counter violence against women and children. Additionally, the Turkish government should provide female equality in the workplace and access to education, particularly in the country’s southeasterly provinces. Türkiye has a female employment rate of 25 percent compared to the European Union average of 55 percent the world must regularly call Türkiye to account for its progress in the areas of women’s rights
