A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, February 2, around 4:17 a.m. local time. Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, and Lebanon were also affected. In the aftermath, Turkey was hit by dozens of aftershocks, including an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5.

The repercussions of the earthquake are being exacerbated by the damage already there, fuel shortages, and a shattered economy in Syria, where there has been fighting for two years. Rescue workers are facing difficulties due to the frigid temperatures brought on by the severe winter weather.

The extreme difficulties in getting help into Syria following the earthquake. The breakdown of the Lebanese financial system and US banking sanctions against Syrian and Lebanese banks pose the largest obstacle, making it necessary to send payments through Western Union or to arrange for someone to bring in dollars in order to transmit money from the UK to Lebanon where medical supplies for Syria have to be sourced.
